Stakeholder

Focus: Project impact on their interests; subject matter knowledge

Roles

Broadly speaking, stakeholders include anyone impacted by a project's outcome. For our purposes, a stakeholder is any person or group other than the project team, client, and end user who will be impacted by a project. Types of stakeholders in this narrow definition may include sponsors, steering committees, management, vendors, or related offices/agencies. It is important to consider this role separately from users and clients, because while they might not be the product consumer, or be the one with the ultimate say on the product’s direction, they can directly affect the project and resulting product’s likelihood of success.

Stakeholders may have siginificant subject matter knowledge, making them a valuable resource for teams to consult. Sometimes stakeholders can influence (directly or indirectly) the client’s decision-making, or have a significant voice in assessing the end product. Whatever their role, identifying and proactively communicating with stakeholders helps projects run smoothly.
