Project Manager
The project management role is sometimes performed by an assigned project manager, but can also be distributed across the core project team. However the function is assigned, proactive project management is essential for successful products.
As projects have become more collaborative and flexible, project managers help maintain focus on the process and end goals. They are keepers of the process, and advocates and protectors of the team. They help remove obstacles, facilitate communication, mediate discussions within the team, and update those external to the team.
A key function is helping the team determine its preferred work style, and defining the work breakdown structure. In addition, project managers monitor progress and risks to timeline and scope, and perform the administrative work needed by all projects, including budgeting, scheduling, and measuring project success.
