Design

If Discovery is about defining what we want to accomplish, Design and Ideation is about defining how we accomplish it. For projects including data acquisition, a data model is created. For projects including Business Intelligence (BI) solutions this is the point where prototypes are developed. BI prototypes are used as feedback into the data model as well as input into the rest of the design documentation. Once a data model is finalized, a source to target document is developed. This is used to define the transformation of data needed for reporting. An ETL overview is developed to guide the developer on the flow of data into the Data Warehouse tables.

BI Design and Ideation begins after table structures are created and initial data has been loaded. BI Design and Ideation should be collaborative and user-centered, with a focus on developing options that are functional but also engaging and easy to learn.

Project activities

  • Design and refine data models
  • Design and refine BI prototypes and solutions
  • Define and refine Source to Target (STT)
  • Create ETL overview document
  • Transition of design specifications to developers
  • Validate against user and business needs
  • Agree on technical workings and structure for data security
  • Update project expectations and scope
